This simple pattern is actually a combination of two patterns. One was featured in Godey's 1856, and the other in 1860. Both patterns call for 130 stitches, with the only difference being the width of the color bands. I found this to be child sized, and made it more adult suitable.
Double Knitted Cuffs Godey's 1861

Sizing Notes: Yes
"Double knitting is one of the best stitches that can be used for comforters, cuffs, chest protectors, also for babys' cot comforters, being very light, soft, and elastic, and not liable to get hard in the washing, and, of course, being double, the warmth is very great." Godey's 1861
